The PPRD Med team was honored to actively participate in the 6th Arab Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), held from 27-29 November 2024 in Kuwait City. Organized by the UNDRR Arab States and the Government of Kuwait, the platform brought together policymakers, regional organizations, technical experts, and civil society to enhance resilience and strengthen regional cooperation in facing increasing disaster risks across the Arab region.
This year’s platform focused on accelerating the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015–2030) by addressing key regional challenges such as:
✅ Climate change-induced hazards and increasing vulnerabilities
✅ Sustainable financing for DRR initiatives
✅ Strengthening multi-hazard early warning systems
✅ Building institutional capacities for effective risk governance
The event served as a valuable opportunity to foster partnerships, exchange best practices, and mobilize collective action towards the Arab Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction 2030.
During the session on “Strengthening Regional and Donor Collaboration for DRR,” supported by the League of Arab States and UNDRR, representatives from PPRD Med engaged in insightful discussions alongside regional leaders and DRR experts. The panel, moderated by Richard Bailey (Chief of External Relations at UNDRR), featured:
🔹 Rashid Al Hajery, Director of Risk Management, GCC Emergency Management Cooperation Center
🔹 Fahed Al Muhairi, Director of Prevention and Safety Management, NCEMA UAE
🔹 Alexandre Custaud, representing the PPRD Med project at the ISTC.
Key discussion points included:
🔹 Regional cooperation for securing sustainable DRR funding and ensuring long-term financial commitments
🔹 Exploring innovative financing models to support investments in disaster risk reduction and resilience-building
🔹 Sharing scalable best practices and lessons learned from successful regional and national DRR initiatives
The session concluded with a Call to Action led by Nora Achkar (Head of UNDRR Arab States), highlighting the importance of stronger regional coordination, improved data-sharing mechanisms, and heightened political commitment to reduce disaster losses and build safer communities.
Events like the Arab Regional Platform reaffirm the vital role of regional partnerships and innovative solutions in addressing disaster risks and protecting vulnerable populations across the Arab region. The PPRD Med team remains committed to contributing to these efforts, working hand in hand with partner countries and regional stakeholders.
